Clearing and Mulching Work Around Georgetown

Category 5 Land Management handles land clearing in Georgetown, South Carolina. Georgetown sits where the Sampit River meets Winyah Bay, and it is the third oldest city in the state. Winyah Bay drains four major rivers, and its watershed is the third largest on the East Coast. Georgetown County's low river bottoms once grew rice and indigo. Most of the old plantations became hunting preserves for northern sportsmen. Atlantic Coast Lumber built a large mill on the Sampit River in 1903, and International Paper built another near town. Both bought vast tracts of pine land, and thousands of farm acres went to pine forest. Evergreen forest now covers about 46 percent of the county. County farms held 41,496 acres of woodland in 2022.

Forestry mulching is how we open that pine ground. We run a Bobcat T300 compact track loader with a forestry mulcher head. It grinds brush, saplings and small trees up to roughly 6 to 8 inches across. The chips stay on your land as ground cover. On the tracts around Georgetown, that means grinding pine regrowth and sweet gum into chips. The same machine handles lot clearing at the edge of town and hunting land clearing on private tracts. Storm cleanup runs off it too. Georgetown is about 60 road miles south of our base in Longs. Estimates are free, and we give them on site.

Timber tracts and river bottomland around Georgetown

Georgetown County's land use plan calls the Northern and Black River area primarily farm and timberland. Large holdings there include timber and rice plantations. Rural villages such as Plantersville and Choppee sit in that stretch, and home parcels there average 4.9 acres. Public hunting land in the county includes the Santee Delta, Samworth and Santee Coastal Reserve wildlife management areas. Mulching food plot sites and fire lanes out of the pines opens a private hunting tract. The chips stay on the ground, and shooting lanes and trails come out the same way.

Saturated bottomland forest covers about 13 percent of Georgetown County. Marshy, low-lying ground is typical of the terrain here. The county's surface water comes from five rivers: the Pee Dee, Waccamaw, Santee, Sampit and Black. The T300 rides on rubber tracks that spread its weight on soft ground. That keeps ruts shallow on damp soil. Standing water is a different call. We work bottomland edges from the dry side, and only after a dry stretch. We never work inside a wetland or out in the marsh.

Wooded lots and storm blowdown on the edge of town

The county's land use plan notes residential growth pressure along the US 701 corridor north and south of the city. It notes more on the west side, near Brick Chimney Road and US 521. Opening a wooded homesite near town starts with the understory. The mulcher takes stems up to roughly 6 to 8 inches, and bigger trees stay standing. Outside the city and off the Waccamaw Neck, the county's rural tree overlay protects seven species at 12 inches. Live oak and bald cypress are on that list. Occupied single family parcels are exempt.

Hurricane Ian made its final landfall on the South Carolina coast near Georgetown on September 30, 2022. Maximum sustained winds reached as high as 80 mph. Wind at that speed breaks limbs and lays saplings flat across a lot or a lane. Mulching blown-down brush and small pines where they lie turns that debris into ground cover. A tree resting on a house or a power line belongs to a tree service and the utility. Once that tree is dealt with, the rest of the lot is mulcher work.

Questions From Georgetown Property Owners

A few of the questions we hear most around Georgetown. Don't see yours? Call us. We're happy to help.

Call (843) 385-1090

How much does land clearing cost in Georgetown?
Price moves with four things: acreage, how thick the growth is, stem size and access. A cutover pine tract grinds at a different pace than a lot wrapped in briar and vines. Low, wet ground can push the work to a drier week. We look at the ground first, then give you a free on-site estimate.
Do I need a permit or tree approval to clear land near Georgetown?
Off the Waccamaw Neck, Georgetown County protects seven tree species at 12 inches. Occupied single family parcels are exempt. Subdividing, selling or developing an acre or more needs a county land disturbance permit. Within half a mile of a major water body, half an acre does. Inside city limits, ask the city's Building and Planning Department. Check first, and see how state and county permit rules connect.
Can you clear a cutover pine tract or a hunting tract near Georgetown?
Yes. The mulcher head grinds stems up to roughly 6 to 8 inches across. Everything it grinds stays on the tract as chips. Stumps get ground low and stay in the ground. An old field gone to pine works the same way. Wet bottomland edges wait for dry weather. We never work inside a wetland.
Do you come to Georgetown from Longs?
Yes. Georgetown sits about 60 road miles south of our base in Longs. We cover the city and rural Georgetown County, including Sampit, Plantersville, Choppee and Dunbar. Across the Waccamaw River, we also work Murrells Inlet and the rest of the Waccamaw Neck. Call (843) 385-1090 with the address and the acreage.
