Clearing and Mulching Work Around Murrells Inlet

Category 5 Land Management handles land clearing in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. Murrells Inlet sits on the Waccamaw Neck, between the Waccamaw River and the Atlantic. Most of it falls in Georgetown County, and the north end meets the Horry County line at Garden City. Elevations across the Murrells Inlet watershed run from about zero to 35 feet. The water table sits high, the coastal soil is deep sand, and about 44 percent of the county is wetland. Lots here run to wooded subdivision parcels and marsh edge ground that stops at the water. Inland toward Burgess the parcels get bigger and the growth gets thicker. Cut it back once and vines and saplings close it in again.

Forestry mulching opens most of this ground, and we run a Bobcat T300 compact track loader with a forestry mulcher head. It grinds brush and small trees up to roughly 6 to 8 inches across into chips. What a mulching pass leaves on the ground is a chip layer that holds the surface together in a coastal rain. We work Prince Creek, Wachesaw East and Collins Creek, and the lots between the Highway 17 Bypass and Highway 17 Business. The run goes north to Garden City and south to Pawleys Island. Lot clearing, brush clearing, bush hogging and storm cleanup run off the same machine. We are based in Longs, about 40 road miles north, and on-site estimates are free.

Low ground and the marsh edge in Murrells Inlet

The inlet is a saltwater estuary, and the marsh runs right to the back of some lots. Tides here swing about 4 to 7 feet. The state calls tidelands, coastal waters, beaches and the beach or dune system critical areas. Any alteration inside them needs a permit from SCDES. Georgetown County requires a land disturbance permit to subdivide, sell or develop a site of 1 acre. Within half a mile of a major water body that trigger drops to half an acre. Mulching moves no dirt, so that permit is a separate question. We work the upland side of the marsh line.

Away from the water the ground is flat and sandy, with pockets that drain badly. The watershed sits mostly in the sea islands and coastal marsh ecoregion. Its north end runs into Carolina flatwoods, where Carolina bays are common. The T300 rides on rubber tracks, so its weight spreads instead of digging in. That gets us across damp ground a wheeled machine would rut. Standing water is different. We work the dry ground first and come back after a dry stretch, the same way we handle the low lots we clear around Socastee.

Wooded lots, the county tree rule and storm blowdown

Lots in Prince Creek and Wachesaw East were left wooded when the neighborhoods went in. On the Waccamaw Neck, Georgetown County protects any tree 10 inches or thicker at chest height, and removing one takes a county permit. Palmetto, wax myrtle, sweet gum and most pines are named exceptions, so check with the county first. The mulcher head takes stems up to roughly 6 to 8 inches, so live oaks and palmettos stay standing while the understory gets ground down. When a parcel needs more, clearing a homesite down to a buildable footprint is the next step.

Storms leave work behind here. Hurricane Ian came ashore near Georgetown on September 30, 2022 with winds as high as 80 miles an hour and a 3 to 6 foot surge. Wind like that snaps limbs and lays young pines down across a lot. Downed brush and small trees mulched where they fell leaves the material on your own ground as cover. A tree leaning on a house or a power line belongs to a tree service and the utility.

Questions From Murrells Inlet Property Owners

A few of the questions we hear most around Murrells Inlet. Don't see yours? Call us. We're happy to help.

Call (843) 385-1090

How much does land clearing cost in Murrells Inlet?
Price tracks acreage and how thick the growth is. Room to get the machine in changes the hours. A quarter acre of light brush behind a Garden City house moves faster than an acre of vines off Wachesaw Road. What land clearing runs per acre in South Carolina covers the published ranges. We look at your parcel and quote it free.
Do I need a permit to clear trees on my Murrells Inlet lot?
On the Waccamaw Neck, Georgetown County protects trees 10 inches or thicker at chest height, and removing one takes a county permit. Palmetto, wax myrtle, sweet gum and most pines are exceptions. Our mulcher head takes stems up to roughly 6 to 8 inches, under that size. Rules differ by parcel, so check with the county.
Can you clear a wooded lot in Prince Creek or Wachesaw with houses on both sides?
Usually yes. The T300 is compact, so a normal side yard or driveway gap is enough. Lots east of Highway 17 in Wachesaw East sit close together, so we plan the entry before the machine unloads. Everything we grind stays on your lot as chips. Stumps get ground low and stay in the ground.
Do you cover Garden City, Surfside Beach and Pawleys Island?
Yes. Murrells Inlet sits about 40 road miles south of Longs, and Garden City, Surfside Beach, Litchfield and Pawleys Island are inside that run. Garden City and Surfside Beach sit in Horry County, the same side of the line as the clearing work we do up the Grand Strand in Myrtle Beach. South of Pawleys Island, the work carries across the Waccamaw to timber tracts and wooded lots around Georgetown. Call (843) 385-1090 with the address and how much ground you want opened.
